Wood Grain: Years Written as Circles
Every ring is one summer and one winter, and the saw decides whether you get to see them as rings or as stripes.
A tree adds pale, fast wood in spring and darker, dense wood late in the season, and the border between them is the line we count. Wide rings mean water and warmth; narrow ones mean a drought, a crowded neighbour, or a cold year that nobody wrote down. A cut stump is a weather record kept by something that never intended to keep one.
Which pattern you see depends on the angle of the cut rather than the tree. Straight across and the years come out as circles; along the trunk and the same rings unroll into the long stripes on a tabletop, the ones that look like flame where a branch once was. Knots are simply branches caught in section, still refusing to line up with anything around them.
Photographs of it want raking light, since grain is a relief map more than a pattern of colour, and light from the side lifts what a flat frontal light flattens. On a screen it reads as a quiet texture that does not compete for attention, and it has the advantage of being one of the few backgrounds where the interesting part is not in the middle.
