Looking Up: Frames With No Ground in Them

Tilt the camera past the treetops and the picture loses its floor, and with it most of its scale.

The moment the ground leaves the frame, the image stops being a place. There is no path to walk in, no horizon to measure against, nothing to say whether these trunks are thirty metres tall or three. What remains is a direction, held still.

Everything in such a picture leans. Trunks that stand parallel on the forest floor tip toward each other near the top, and the sky between them turns into a torn shape rather than a background. The exposure is never comfortable either: the gap is several stops brighter than the undersides of the leaves, so a photographer keeps the veins or keeps the cloud, rarely both.

On a screen this awkwardness works in its favour. With no horizon line, nothing argues with the row of icons or the edge of the dock, and the eye reads the whole thing as texture instead of as a view. It is a wallpaper that stays in the background because it was never quite a landscape to begin with.
