Overcast: The Day That Comes Without Shadows

The sun is half a degree wide, which is why on a clear day edges land hard and a leaf can cast a shadow with a readable outline. Push a layer of cloud in front of it and that half degree becomes the whole dome: light arrives from everywhere at once and shadows lose their edge, then lose their centre. What is left underfoot is a faint darkening where things meet the ground.

Colour behaves better than most people expect. Without specular highlights washing the surface out, green reads as green and wet bark goes almost black-brown; the range between brightest and darkest in the scene shrinks to two or three stops, which is why macro and portrait work drift toward cloudy afternoons. The one thing the day refuses to give is the sky itself, a flat white ceiling with nothing written on it.

So the framing changes: less sky, more ground, and shape carrying the weight that light usually carries. Pictures made this way have no single brightest point, nothing pulling the eye to one corner and holding it.
