Lit Windows: The City's Nightly Grid
After dark a tower loses its shape and keeps only its arithmetic.
In daylight a tower is a solid thing — concrete, glass, the weight of it. Once the sky goes out the volume goes with it, and what stays is a grid of small lit rectangles hanging in the dark. The lights never arrive all at once. They fill in one square at a time, on nobody's schedule.
Look for a minute and the squares stop matching. Office floors run cold and white; a kitchen two floors down is amber; one window flickers blue because a television is still on. From across the river the pattern reads as order, but it is a few hundred people deciding separately when to go home. The dark squares hold up as much of the picture as the bright ones.
As a wallpaper this is unusually easy to live with. The bright parts are small and the background is honest black, so icons and text settle into the empty floors without a fight. Keep the exposure low rather than lifting the shadows — from a distance the facade turns into texture, and up close every window is still there to be counted.
