Curved Metal: How a Car Body Folds the World
Car paint is a mirror with opinions. It takes the street, the sky and the person holding the camera, and folds all three into one sweep of light.
A parked car is doing nothing, and that is exactly why it photographs well. The paint has no subject of its own, so it borrows one. Stand close and the whole street arrives on the door, compressed at the edges, stretched across the middle, turned upside down wherever the panel changes its mind.
People who shoot cars spend most of their attention on what is behind them. A long lens flattens the reflections into bands of colour; a polariser decides how much sky stays on the hood. Late light is kinder to a curve than noon, because it lands at an angle the metal can hold instead of scattering it into glare.
On a screen it all ends up quieter than the subject suggests. You get a long gradient down a fender, a hard seam where two panels meet, and a smear of cloud that no longer belongs to any particular sky. Nothing moves, which is an odd fate for an object built to.
