Snow in the City

For a few hours, the loudest place you know goes quiet.

Snow does to a city what an eraser does to a pencil sketch — not deleting it, only softening every hard line. Curbs round off. Parked cars become smooth white shapes. The gaps between buildings, usually packed with noise, fill instead with something slow and falling.

Sound is the first thing to go. Fresh snow is full of trapped air, and air swallows footsteps, engines, the argument two floors up. For an hour the city runs on mute, and you hear how much of a street was only ever its own echo. What is left is the hush, and your breath hanging in front of you.

Then the tracks begin — tires, boots, a dog stitching a crooked line across the park. The snow keeps a record of everyone who passed, until the plows arrive and the city clears its throat. A screen holds the quieter version: the block after the snowfall and before the footprints, when the loudest place you know briefly forgets how to be loud.
