Old Stone, Slow Light

A temple is mostly patience, and the light that crosses it is in no hurry either.

Morning light arrives at a temple sideways. It catches the carved lip of one step, holds there, and takes the better part of an hour to reach the next one. Anyone who turns up at noon instead goes home with flat pictures and a useful lesson about waiting.

What a camera really records here is wear. Thresholds worn concave by four centuries of feet, a handrail polished to a shine no varnish could fake, incense smoke that a slow shutter thickens into standing fog. The palette stays small on purpose: ochre, weathered red, moss keeping to the north side of everything.

On a screen this restraint pays. Stone is a low-contrast surface, so icons sit on it without a fight, and the line of the eaves gives the frame one clean diagonal to lean on. Set it as a wallpaper and the desktop reads a few degrees quieter than it did before.
