What Snow Asks of a Forest

A pine holds winter differently than a bare branch, and the difference is the whole photograph.

Bare trees let snow fall through them; conifers catch it. Each needle-cluster becomes a small shelf, and by morning the whole tree is carrying a weight it was built, over long evolutionary patience, to carry. A branch dips, holds, and does not break, and that quiet negotiation is what the camera is really photographing.

Snow edits the forest down to essentials. Colour drains toward white and a cold blue that pools in every hollow and footprint; sound goes with it, absorbed by a surface that was air an hour ago. What remains is structure, trunks and spacing and the grey ladder of branches, read more clearly than in any other season.

On a screen the scene keeps its discipline. There is no motion to wait for, no story arriving, only a forest doing the slow work of holding still under a load. As wallpaper it asks little of the desktop around it, which is the point: some images earn their place by staying quiet.
