Slow Fish, Bright Water
A koi pond is a screensaver that predates screens by a thousand years.
Watching fish move through dark water is one of the oldest attention exercises there is. Monasteries knew it; landscape gardeners engineered it; now lock screens inherit it. The colours — persimmon, white-gold, ink — were bred patiently, generation by generation, for exactly this kind of looking.
The photographs in this set stay close to the surface, where fins blur into calligraphy and ripples redraw the fish with every stroke.
It is difficult to check the time angrily on top of a koi pond. We consider this a feature.
