Rim Light: The Outline That Glows

When the sun is low and behind the animal, every hair along its edge is lit and everything inside stays dark.

It only happens in the last hour, when the light arrives almost level with the ground and grazes the subject instead of landing on it. Fur, feather and grass seed all catch it the same way, one bright line drawn around a body that keeps no detail of its own. The animal stops being a description and becomes a shape with a filament along it.

The exposure has to be argued with. A meter reading the whole frame will try to rescue the dark middle and blow the edge into nothing, so the useful move is to underexpose deliberately and let the body go where it wants to go. Standing so the sun sits just behind the head, hidden by an ear or a shoulder, keeps the flare out and leaves the line intact.

It is not a portrait and does not pretend to be. You learn the species from posture rather than face, which turns out to be enough more often than expected. On a screen it holds up well against a dark interface, since most of the frame is already dark and the one bright line is thin enough not to compete with anything on top of it.
