Pink, the Color Nobody Takes Seriously

Pink has a short shelf life outdoors. It arrives for a few minutes after the sun is gone, holds for a week on a cherry branch, then leaves. For a color that rare, it collects an odd amount of condescension: the shade we keep for gift wrap, for plastic, for things nobody expects to last.

Cameras do nothing for its reputation. Pink sits high on the histogram with almost no saturation to spare, so a third of a stop of extra exposure flattens it into white, and a warm white balance drags it toward a muddy salmon. Petals are the exception worth learning. Backlight them and the pink separates into layers, because the color was never sitting on the surface. It was the light coming through.

On a screen the problem reverses. Pink will not stay behind the icons; it steps forward, asks to be looked at, and stops working as a background. The ones that survive a week on a desktop are the diluted versions: pink held down by fog, pink pushed to the far edge of a landscape, pink cut with enough gray that you notice it second. Keeping it usually means dimming it to the point where you can just still name it.
