Leaves, Held Up to the Light

Backlight turns a flat green thing into a map of its own plumbing.

A leaf spends its whole life doing one job: catching light and turning it into sugar. Point a camera into the sun behind it and the job becomes visible. The green goes translucent, and the veins darken into a branching diagram, the way a river shows its tributaries only from the air.

Backlight is unforgiving and generous at once. It flattens the surface into a single glowing plane, then hands back every detail the flat front had hidden: the ribs, the small tears, the insect's half-finished meal along one edge. Close the aperture and the whole network sharpens; open it up and one vein stays in focus while the rest melts into color.

On a screen the effect holds. The leaf reads less as botany than as stained glass, a panel lit from behind, asking nothing of you except that you notice the plumbing was beautiful all along.
