Silhouettes: What Is Left When the Light Stands Behind
Give the exposure to the sky, and everything in front of it keeps only its edge.
A silhouette is not really a decision about the subject. It is a decision about the sky. The moment the exposure is handed to the brightest part of the frame, whatever stands in front of that brightness loses its detail and keeps nothing but an outline. Nothing is being hidden on purpose; the sensor has simply run out of room.
What survives the subtraction turns out to be oddly precise. A pine still reads as a pine, a heron as a heron, and with the right posture even a particular person is recognisable. Shape carries more identity than we usually credit it with. Colour, texture and expression all leave the picture, and recognition still arrives, half a second late.
Dusk is when this happens without any effort, because the sun drops low enough for the difference in brightness to open up on its own. On a screen the arrangement is convenient: the dark mass sits low and quiet, the sky stays open above it, and icons land on the part of the image that was never carrying detail anyway.
